The term “persistent identifier” (PI or PID) identifies a long-lived reference to a document, file, Web page or other object. I
It is usually used in the context of digital objects accessible on the Internet.
Typically, such an identifier is not only persistent, but actionable-that is, it is possible to link it to a Web browser and be taken to the identified source.
Among the various “objects” to which a “Persistent Identifier” can be associated, we also find users. Through the association of such a reference to an individual it is thus possible to have a unique and unified view of the user across multiple devices, mobile, desktop and APP without duplication.
Here then, if a user logs in to a social meda or email account and remains logged in and logged out, he can be recognized wherever he is.
All of this translates into the ability to collect a considerable amount of information about the very behavior of users that can be used for effective profiling and segmentation strategies, first, and for personalizing the customer experience, later, through the use of customer data platforms.
